What Does a Gas Fitter Actually Do?

A gas fitter works on anything between the meter and the burner. On a Shortland job that can mean:

  • Connecting cooktops, wall ovens, barbecues, pool heaters and room heaters
  • Extending pipe to a new kitchen point, a back deck or a gas water heater
  • Tracking down leaks with an electronic sniffer and a pressure test
  • Capping a line off when an appliance is taken out or a kitchen is gutted
  • Lodging the compliance paperwork NSW requires for gas work

None of this is DIY territory. A joint that has not been leak-tested can let gas collect where a pilot light or a switch will find it.

Gas Leak Detection and Repair

A whiff of gas in the laundry, a hiss at a fitting, or a bill that has risen without reason. The search and repair are on the gas leak detection page.

How Do You Know the Gas Is Faulty?

Some signs are easy to miss until you know them:

  • The rotten-egg odour deliberately added to the gas so people notice it
  • A faint hissing at a joint, a flexible hose or a bottle regulator
  • Burner flames on the stove turning floppy and yellow
  • A space heater or water heater pilot that will not stay lit
  • A strip of lawn or garden dying back for no clear reason, which can sit over a leaking buried pipe

If the smell is strong, get out first and make the emergency call from the street. We repair the fault once the immediate danger has passed.

How We Handle a Gas Job

  1. 01

    Ring or send the form

Call (02) 4063 1093 or use the form to explain the fault. We ask enough to bring the right equipment the first time.

  2. 02

    A fixed price first

A plumber inspects the job and names a fixed figure up front. Nothing gets started until you give the go-ahead.

  3. 03

    Isolate, fit, leak-test

Supply is shut at the meter, the pipework is altered or repaired, and a pressure test is passed before any burner is relit.

  4. 04

    Covered for a year

Every job carries our 365-day warranty on all work. If something we did isn't right, ring the same number.

What Moves the Price of Gas Work?

Length of pipe matters most on gas jobs. Each extra metre between meter and burner adds copper or approved pipe and fitting time.

The other factors:

  • The route, as a run through a brick wall or under a floor takes longer than one clipped along the outside
  • The appliance, since a cooktop hook-up and a pool heater are different jobs
  • The compliance testing and paperwork every gas job needs

Gas Lines and the Postwar Build

Pipe runs in fibro and brick houses

Shortland's postwar Housing Commission streets are lined with low-set homes in fibro or brick veneer, and fitting a gas stove or an instantaneous gas water heater to one means finding a path for new pipe through walls and subfloors built in the 1950s and 60s.

Single-storey layouts help

With one level and a crawl space below, a new line can be run under the floor and brought up where it is needed, and the later infill houses nearby are just as reachable. The price follows the actual route the pipe will take.

Questions Shortland Households Ask About Gas

Do I need a licensed gas fitter to connect a new BBQ?

Yes. Installing a quick-connect outlet for a barbecue, or hard-connecting one, means working on the gas supply, and NSW law reserves that for a licensed gas fitter. The fitter leak-tests the new point and lodges the required compliance certificate.

What should I do first if I can smell gas in my Shortland home?

Get the whole household outdoors and keep away from switches, plugs and anything with a flame. From the footpath, phone the gas network's emergency number, then phone us so the leak can be traced and fixed.

Can you convert my kitchen from electric to gas cooking?

Yes, where the house has a gas supply or one can be connected. We run a new line to the kitchen, fit the outlet for the cooktop or freestanding oven, test it and connect the appliance, with the price fixed before any wall or floor is opened.

Do you install gas pool heaters and outdoor heaters?

Yes. Pool heaters, patio heaters, fire pits and outdoor kitchens are all gas appliance installs, and each one is priced first and carries our 365-day warranty on all work.

When Another Trade Gets the Call

When we're not the right call: the meter and the service pipe leading to it are owned by the gas distributor, so a leak there goes to them. When an oven or heater has a faulty ignition module or control board, the manufacturer's own technician may need to repair it before we reconnect.
