Blocked Drains Shortland

Shortland Plumbing Co clears blocked drains across Shortland and the nearby Newcastle suburbs, from slow kitchen lines to sewers surcharging in wet weather. Every job is priced before work starts, and a camera pass confirms the line is properly open before we pack up. The wider Shortland Plumbing Co run covers hot water, gas and urgent calls too.

Shortland Drain Services

A drain can fail half a dozen ways, and each failure has a page:

CCTV Drain Inspection

Find the fault, not the guess. The camera films the pipe interior, and the footage doubles as proof the line is clear:

Drain Jetting

Plain water, serious pressure. High-pressure jetting scours the pipe wall and shifts grease, silt and roots without chemicals:

Blocked Sewer

A health risk, not just a mess. A surcharging sewer needs clearing straight away, wet weather or not:

Stormwater Drains

Yard gullies overflowing in the rain. A blocked or overloaded stormwater line leaves the water nowhere to go:

Pipe Relining

Repair without the excavation. When the camera shows a cracked or root-damaged line, relining fixes it from the inside:

Tree Root Removal

Roots that keep coming back. Ageing clay sewers invite root growth, and the line stays blocked until it is repaired:

Why Do Drains Here Block So Readily?

Flat ground slows the water down

The suburb sits on low, level ground beside the estuary, and drains need fall to move water. Where there is almost no slope, solids settle instead of travelling, so a line that would clean itself on a hillside needs help here.

Old clay joints let groundwater in

With a high water table under the suburb, the postwar Housing Commission homes sit on earthenware sewers that are wet most of the time, and those joints give way as they age. An open joint invites silt and fine roots, and the pipe loses capacity season by season.

The rain finishes the job

Area-level figures give an average annual rainfall of 1,076 millimetres, and Hunter downpours arrive in bursts. A line already slowed by silt or roots has nothing in reserve when a storm hits.

From Your Call to the Camera Check

  1. 01

    Ring or send the form

Call (02) 4063 1093 or use the form to explain the fault. We ask enough to bring the right equipment the first time.

  2. 02

    A fixed price first

A plumber inspects the job and names a fixed figure up front. Nothing gets started until you give the go-ahead.

  3. 03

    The clear itself

High-pressure jetting or the eel opens the line, then the camera runs the full length and confirms water is flowing freely.

  4. 04

    Covered for a year

Every job carries our 365-day warranty on all work. If something we did isn't right, ring the same number.

What Drives the Price of a Drain Clear?

Four things set what a drain job costs:

  • Access to the line Tight subfloor crawl spaces under the commission-era fibro homes add time to any underground work.
  • What the line is built from A clay sewer with cracked joints is a different job from a sound PVC line.
  • How far the camera needs to go A long run with several bends takes longer to inspect and report.
  • Whether a repair follows Clearing is one figure; if the footage shows a damaged line, the repair is quoted as its own job.

When the Job Belongs to Someone Else

When we're not the right call: Hunter Water owns the sewer main under the street, so a fault out under the roadway goes on their faults line, not our quote. Work inside your boundary is what we attend and price up front. A drain fault caused by a collapsed retaining wall needs a builder first, and the next step is theirs to quote.

Blocked Drain Questions, Answered Plainly

Why does my drain block again every winter?

The suburb lies low beside the wetlands, and the ground holds water well into the wet months. Saturated soil works on the joints of ageing clay lines, so a drain that copes in the dry season slows down once the ground is soaked. A camera pass shows whether the line is blocked or cracked.

Can a camera check tell if the pipe is cracked rather than just blocked?

Yes. The camera records the full length of the line, and the footage shows cracked joints, root intrusion and collapsed sections plainly. If the pipe is damaged, the recording becomes the basis for a repair quote, and you see exactly what we saw.

Should I pour a chemical cleaner down a blocked drain?

We advise against it. Caustic cleaners can damage older pipes, and they rarely shift a root ball or a collapsed joint anyway. Jetting uses plain water at pressure and leaves nothing behind in the pipe or the soil next to the wetlands.

Do you clear drains for shops and schools as well as houses?

Yes. Commercial drains get the same jetter and camera, whether it is a shop in the village strip or a medical practice. Grease and heavy daily use make those lines a job of their own, priced once the plumber has seen the access.
