What Makes a Stormwater Line Stop Working?

Stormwater pipes carry roof and yard runoff away from the house. They stop doing it when something blocks the path, or when rain arrives faster than the pipe can carry it.

  • Leaves and fine silt washed into pits, settling along the pipe floor
  • Roots finding their way into old jointed earthenware lines
  • Storm debris jammed at a downpipe outlet or a pit grate
  • A pipe laid flat or sagging, so sediment sits instead of moving

Stormwater or Sewer Trouble?

They look alike from the back step, but they fail in different places and need different fixes.

When the water appears

A stormwater fault floods the yard, the driveway or the lowest pit while it rains, then eases as the rain does. A sewer fault keeps backing up in fine weather and smells.

Where it shows

Toilets, showers and sinks all draining slowly point to the sewer. If the house drains normally while downpipes and pits spill outside, the stormwater pipe is the problem. Where it is hard to tell, CCTV drain inspection footage answers it.

How We Clear a Stormwater Line

  1. 01

    Start at the surface

Grates, pits and downpipe outlets are checked first, because a leaf-packed grate is a quick fix.

  2. 02

    Clear the buried pipe

Silt and debris are flushed out, with the jetter used where the line needs scouring. The drain jetting page explains how.

  3. 03

    Film the pipe

With water moving, the camera checks for cracks, sags or roots.

  4. 04

    Price anything else

If the footage shows damage that will bring the blockage back, the repair is priced as well, including the no-dig pipe relining option.

Sewer problems sit on the blocked drains hub, and tree root removal covers pipes full of roots.

What Sets the Price of a Stormwater Clear?

The number of pits and openings on the run is the first factor, since a long line with several gullies takes more time than one short pipe.

The price also depends on:

  • Soft leaf litter, which flushes quickly, versus packed silt and roots that need the jetter
  • Whether a camera check is needed once the line runs
  • Storm-night bookings, which are after-hours work

This Ground, This Water

Barely any fall

Shortland sits just above the wetlands on ground that is almost level, so rain has to be carried off in pipes rather than running away on its own. Any narrowing in the line turns into ponding once a heavy storm starts.

A lot of rain, and wet soil already

The area's average rainfall comes to 1,076 millimetres a year on area-level figures, and the high water table leaves the alluvial ground little room to absorb more. When pits back up, water sits in the yard instead of soaking in.

Roots in the old lines

Big trees in damp backyards push roots into jointed earthenware stormwater pipes laid with the postwar fibro and brick houses, and a pipe that coped for years can choke in one wet season.

When We're Not the Right Call

A blocked kerb inlet or the public stormwater pipe under the road is part of the City of Newcastle drainage network, so you report it to council. A sewer backing up inside the house is a different fault, covered on the blocked sewer page.

Questions From Shortland Households

Why do stormwater drains in Shortland overload so easily?

The land is close to flat and only just above the estuary wetlands, so rainwater has very little fall to follow. In a heavy Hunter storm the pipe receives water faster than it can pass it on, and the overflow comes up through pits and gullies into the yard.

Is a flooded yard from a blocked stormwater drain an emergency?

If water is getting into the house or lying against the walls, yes, ring us that day. A lawn that takes a while to drain once the storm has passed can wait for an ordinary booking. In both cases the price is agreed before anyone starts clearing.

Do you clear stormwater pits and downpipes as well as the underground line?

Yes. Gutters, downpipes, pits and the buried pipe work as one system, and the choke can be anywhere along it. We check the whole run from roof to outlet, then film the pipe once water is moving.

Can you stop the same stormwater drain blocking again next wet season?

If silt or leaves caused it, a cleared pipe stays open until enough debris builds up again, and gutter guards can slow that down. If the camera finds a cracked or root-filled pipe, you get a price for repairing it, which can include relining.
